DescriptionAimed at 15-18 year olds (S5-6/Highers/Advanced Highers students), these 3 day workshops will introduce university-level study and practice in our disciplines, and encourage students to think beyond their school work and to explore new ideas. The emphasis will be on both critical thought and creativity, and on working in teams to research or create a small-scale project within three days. Workshop 1: Learn about the law - £250 standard price Lead: Dr Alexander Houghton, Lecturer in Public Law, Jurisprudence, & Philosophy at the University of Stirling. Dr Houghton’s research focuses on how to rationally resolve legal disagreements and the role of judges within the legal system. His work focuses on the interdisciplinary connections between practical legal questions and abstract philosophical reasoning. Prior to joining Stirling, he was a doctoral fellow at the Surrey Centre for Law and Philosophy, and a visiting scholar at the UCLA School of Law. Workshop 2: Exploring Identities - £150 standard price Lead: Dr Jacky Collins, Lecturer in Spanish and Latin American Studies at Stirling University and the Festival Director for Newcastle Noir. As ‘Dr Noir’, she regularly interviews crime fiction authors at national and international events. Jacky also hosts a series of author ‘consultations’ on the Newcastle Noir YouTube channel – ‘The Doctor Will See You Now’. More recently she translated Antonia Lassa’s Llevado en la piel (Skin Deep). Workshop 3: Why care about politics? - £150 standard price Lead: Dr. Sean Kippin, Senior Lecturer in Public Policy. Sean is an expert in UK politics and policy (aka ‘what governments do, and why they do it’). He is the author of a number of books, including Politics and Policy Making in the UK (with Paul Cairney) and Public Policy and Democratic Backsliding in the UK. Workshop 4: Making Games Without Coding - £150 standard price Lead: Dr Conor McKeown, Lecturer in Digital Media at the University of Stirling.
